Ewuaso-Suswa Calf Fattening Program

This program is designed to utilize male calves aged 18 months from local cattle owners, fattening them over a six-month period until they reach 24 months of age. This process will take place in a specialized facility within the conservancy, ensuring optimal growth conditions. The goal is to produce premium-quality beef that can be sold to high-end outlets, with the profits distributed among the cattle owners and the broader community.

This program is rooted in the belief that by working together, we can create a self-sustaining economic model that benefits not just individual cattle owners, but the entire Ewuaso-Suswa community. We aim to ensure that this model is inclusive, with a strong focus on involving women, youth, and marginalized groups to promote equitable distribution of benefits and opportunities.

Objectives

Increase the Value of Livestock

Enhance the weight and quality of 18-monthold calves, bringing them to an optimal market weight through a controlled feeding program.

Promote Sustainable Practices

Implement rotational grazing and other sustainable practices to prevent overgrazing, ensuring the long-term health of the herd and the community.

Generate Sustainable Income

Provide a stable source of income for cattle owners and the community, helping to fund other local development projects.

Enhance Community Development

Position the program as a model for other agricultural initiatives, potentially attracting further investment or grants for similar projects within the community.

The calf fattening program represents a significant opportunity for the Ewuaso-Suswa Wildlife Conservancy to enhance the economic well-being of the community while promoting sustainable and ethical agricultural practices.
